Selecting a Quality Contractor

National Restoration North Carolina Selecting a Quality Contractor

Last Updated: April 11, 2024

At National Restoration®️ North Carolina (NRNC), we know how important it is to choose a quality company for your roofing, remodeling and remediation needs. It’s a really big deal! And we don’t take that decision lightly. Whether you’re in a major water leak, fire damage, smoke or mold emergency, wondering whether you need a roof repair or replacement, or considering redesigning your space with a remodel or new addition, it’s important to have the right company for the job.

As a local, Licensed General Contractor with over 20 years of experience, we provide water, fire, smoke and mold mitigation, renovations, remodels, new additions, roofing repairs and replacements, custom millwork, cabinets and closets. 1. Know the Difference Between a General Contractor and a Roofing Contractor

A Licensed General Contractor is trained and equipped to handle all of your needs, whereas a Roofing Contractor can only manage your roof repair or installation. In most cases, if you need a roof repair or replacement due to old age, premature aging, wear and tear, or storm damage, your home may have also endured interior leaks or water damage that may require repairs to your siding, gutters, interiors, baseboards, walls, paint, and other areas such as patios, decks, balconies, sheds, screened enclosures, etc. If you need a remodel and you use a handyman, they don’t have the level of experience on every aspect of the project including material knowledge, design, layout, plumbing, HVAC, etc. A Licensed General Contractor can do it all.

  1. Check Their Credentials: Ensure They’re Licensed, Bonded & Insured

A professional contractor holds licensures and certifications to install materials per state building codes, regulations and manufacturer’s guidelines. Be sure to request a copy of the company insurance certificates and agent contact details. Choosing a company that is licensed, bonded and insured is so important. Ensure that they also carry appropriate insurance and workers’ compensation. In the event of a jobsite accident at your home or business, this is crucial.

  1. Knowledge is Power: Check Their Experience Level

Advanced education and quality workmanship are essential for successful projects.  It’s important to review company specialties, years of experience, expertise and workmanship. Check for manufacturer installation certifications, industry accreditations, affiliations and memberships. This helps ensure that they’re committed to ongoing learning and staying up to date with the latest knowledge for their team members.

  1. Reputation Matters!

Taking just a few minutes to do a quick online search for their reviews can provide all the peace of mind you need to know you selected the right contractor for your project. This simple task is one of the easiest and fastest ways to learn if a company walks the talk. Find out what their past customers are saying about them. You can check out their website, Social Media channels, Google reviews and other review sites to find out more about them.

  • Start by doing a Google search on the company.
  • Check out the company website. Thoroughly review the company services that are listed on their website. This will help you determine if they are a good fit for your project. If a company’s website doesn’t back up what they told you in person, looks sketchy, or doesn’t showcase their information clearly, you might wonder what kind of effort they’re going to put into your construction project. Details matter. Check their website for licenses and accreditations. They should be prominently displayed. Make sure the company office addresses, phone #, email and contact information are clearly listed. Check for a portfolio or photo section of work on their website. Also check for testimonials. A great company will showcase their work and their reviews.
  • Check their Social Media sites and Google reviews. You can find out A LOT about a company with this quick search.  This is an excellent way to find out real feedback from real people.
  1. Referrals, Referrals, Referrals

Of course, if someone referred you, this also provides peace of mind. You already have social proof that they did a great job! At NRNC, we are so grateful to continuously receive so many referrals that we launched a Referral Rewards program to pay it forward to our happy clients. If you don’t have a referral, we recommend that you review up to 3 contractors to help you make your final selection. It’s important not to make your selection on pricing alone. We have had to fix soooo many projects for clients who previously hired shoddy contractors who didn’t complete the work correctly, leaving the homeowner with more mess, more hassle, and more money spent to fix it. When you’re choosing, never make your selection based on price alone. You can end up paying twice for the job to be done well and to be done right. Lowball pricing can mean lack of knowledge, which means your precious property is a test run. It can also mean lower quality materials, incomplete warranties that don’t hold up, or an out-of-town company who may not be around when the materials or workmanship fails.

  1. Material Options & Warranties

Selecting a company that offers a variety of material options to choose from is critical when you consider using their services for your project. Expert contractors will have a range of quality products to fit your needs and budget. For instance, when you choose a roofing system, you’ll naturally want it to blend well with the existing design and architectural style of your home or business.

A quality contractor will offer a variety of roofing types, manufacturer options and warranties. When you choose new kitchen cabinets, shelving, or other essential elements of a remodel, you’ll want to know that you have the right material for your needs. We provide an array of materials to fit your project needs and unique preferences. We’re committed to utilizing the latest technology to continually offer the most advanced level of service to our customers.
